Woman from Kenya undergoes the first Watchman implantation in Navi Mumbai

Woman from Kenya undergoes the first Watchman implantation in Navi Mumbai 83 year-old Zareena Patel from Nairobi, Kenya, was diagnosed with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation (Irregular Heart Rhythm) with high risk of developing stroke, over two years ago. To reduce the risk of stroke, she was prescribed blood thinners, which inevitably led to a haemorrhage. Not knowing what course of treatment to follow next, Zareena finally met with Dr. Sanjeevkumar Kalkekar, Consultant Interventional Cardiology at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai. Dr. Kalkekar suggested a solution for her that would help her heart condition, without increasing the risk of haemorrhage. Zareena soon flew to India to undergo a procedure to get a Left Atrial Closure device, also known as the Watchman device. This was the first Watchman implantation in Navi Mumbai and the second implantation in all of Mumbai region. Zareena’s health has dramatically improved since the procedure. She said that she was very happy with the care she received and was impressed with the availability of her doctors every time she had a question or a doubt. She was grateful that the team took out time to explain the procedure in detail and helped her get her life back.
